NATRUE, along with nine other associations, has issued a statement urging the European Parliament to adopt a clear, transparent, and feasible framework for the substantiation and verification of environmental claims. A poorly designed framework will hinder the achievement of the EU’s climate and environmental objectives, as it will not empower consumers to make more sustainable choices and will disincentivise traders from making investments in sustainable innovation.
While we commend the European Parliament’s approval of the Green Claims Directive, we believe that the proposed rules, in conjunction with the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition proposal, will be key to fighting greenwashing practices and creating a level playing field (and legal clarity) among traders.
However, we are calling on EU policymakers to address some remaining issues to ensure that environmental claims are properly substantiated using a viable approach that benefits for both traders and Members States, with clear, harmonised, and simplified procedures.
